“Death of a Messenger” is a new Big Island mystery novel by Bob McCaw, a part-time resident and student of Hawaiian history, culture, myth and mystery since the 1990s.

The protagonist, Hilo police detective Koa Kane, confronts a grisly ritual murder in a lava cave on the Pohakuloa Training Area. The mutilated body soon leads to an extraordinary archaeological discovery. As he pursues the murderer, Kane comes face to face with his own island heritage, deflecting the hostility of both haoles and native activists. Along the way, he encounters a rich stew of suspects, including the descendant of a Hawaiian king, antiquities thieves, a con artist and a constellation of stargazers. Kane is a master at reading clues, where everyone has something to hide, but no one seems guilty of murder. In the end, he must race against time and the elements to prevent a devilishly clever killer from striking again.

Death of a Messenger is available at Kona Stories in Kailua-Kona and Basically Books in Hilo.
